Country and Unit Context:

 The World Bank office in Nouakchott operates within the Western and Central Africa Region, focusing on projects that align with the World Bank's mission statement. The Nouakchott office comprises a diverse teamworking closely with the Mauritanian government, local partners, and other international organizations to implement a range of development programs.

Under the 2018-2023 Country Partnership Framework (CPF) and aligned with the Government’s development priorities, the Bank’s portfolio in Mauritania currently includes eight national projects and nine regional operations, with an overall commitment of $910.5 million. The World Bank's support in Mauritania focuses on People (Population, Education, Health, Nutrition, Social Protection and Inclusion), Planet (Agriculture,Food Security, Climate change, Water management), and Infrastructure (Energy and Extractives, Transport and Urban, Resilience and Land).

The World Bank also supports capacity building and institutional strengthening to ensure sustainable development outcomes. The Nouakchott office plays a pivotal role in coordinating these efforts, ensuring that projects are effectively managed to deliver the country’s strategic priorities.

Job duties & responsibilities:

The World Bank office in Nouakchott is looking for a qualified candidate who could provide administrative support and serve as Administrative Assistant. Successful candidate will report to the Country Manager.


The Administrative Assistant will work as part of the administrative and resource management staff in the Country Office. Under the general day-to-day supervision of the Resource Management Analyst, s/he would carry out the following duties and accountabilities:

  • Support the Resource Management Team in processing accounting and administrative transactions for the country office; and ensure that all transactions are made in compliance with the World Bank’s policies and procedures.
  • Assist with purchase orders for goods & services.
  • Assist in asset management tasks including physical verification, maintenance, recording, reconciliation, monitor movements and participate in asset disposal activities.
  • Handle routine data entry and correspondence.
  • Maintain staff lists, coordinate mail pouch; managing daily transport deployment and producing the related reports in compliance with the World Bank’s policies and procedures.
  • Initiate and process appointments for Short Term Temporaries (STTs) and Short-Term Consultants (STCs).
  • Handle vendor registration for firms and organizations.
  • Support the preparation of quarterly budget reports.
  • Identify and resolve diverse accounting and administrative transactional issues as they arise, often requiring interpretation of procedures and processes; independently determine appropriate application in consultation with the accounting team members.
  • Undertake ad hoc inquiries in standard and non-standard databases, retrieve, manipulate, and present accounting and administrative data as needed from time to time.
  • Provide appropriate back up to colleagues and perform other tasks assigned with respect to the Country Office program.

Selection Criteria

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance with a minimum 2 years of relevant experience.

• Experience with/understanding of Government systems or international organizations would be an advantage. 

• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English and French. Good command of Arabic is desirable. 

• Advanced computer skills and full proficiency in the use of relevant software applications (MS Office).  Familiarity with SAP is desirable.

  • Drive for Results - Able to take personal ownership and accountability to meet deadlines and achieve agreed-upon results and has the personal organization to do so.
  • Teamwork (Collaboration) and Inclusion - Collaborate with other team members and contribute efficiently to teams’ work and output, demonstrating respect and flexibility for different points of view.
